Installation Guides
Welcome to the Cartell Motors, Lda installation resource center. These guides provide essential information for installing your crate engine, transmission, or outboard motor. Important: These are general guidelines. Always consult your vehicle’s factory service manual and the specific instructions included with your product.
⚠️ Safety First: Engine and transmission installation involves heavy components, flammable fluids, and complex systems. Use proper safety equipment, adequate lifting tools, and seek professional assistance if you are uncertain about any step.
Crate Engine Installation Guide
Pre-Installation Checklist
Before beginning your crate engine installation, verify the following:

- Remove engine carefully, ensuring transmission and accessories clear the engine bay
Step 2: Prepare New Crate Engine
Remove shipping materials
Remove all protective covers, shipping brackets, and plastic wrap
Install oil drain plug
Apply thread sealant if required; torque to specification
Prime oil system
Use a priming tool with a drill to circulate oil before first start
Install spark plugs
Apply anti-seize to threads; torque to spec
Install intake manifold
If not pre-installed, use new gaskets and follow torque sequence
Install valve covers
Use new gaskets; torque evenly
Install oil filter
Pre-fill with oil; hand-tighten plus 3/4 turn
Install water pump and pulleys
If not pre-installed; use thread sealant on bolts entering water jackets
Install flywheel or flexplate
Use new bolts with thread locker; torque to spec
Install clutch and pressure plate (manual)
Align with alignment tool; torque pressure plate bolts evenly
Step 3: Install New Engine
- Position engine over engine bay using load leveler for angle adjustment
- Align motor mounts and lower engine onto mounts
- Install motor mount nuts/bolts but do not fully tighten
- Connect transmission:
- Automatic: Guide torque converter into flexplate; ensure converter is fully seated
- Manual: Align transmission input shaft with clutch disc; use alignment tool
- Install bellhousing bolts and torque to specification
- Install torque converter bolts (automatic) and torque to spec
Step 4: Connect Systems
Fuel System
Install fuel lines; check for leaks; prime EFI system before starting
Cooling System
Install radiator, hoses, and heater lines; fill with proper coolant mixture; burp cooling system
Electrical
Connect main engine harness; install battery cables; verify starter connections; connect sensors
Exhaust
Install headers or manifolds with new gaskets; torque bolts in sequence
Accessories
Install alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor; install drive belts; tension properly
Intake & Air
Install air intake; connect MAF sensor; verify throttle linkage operation
Fluids
Fill engine oil; fill transmission fluid; fill power steering fluid; fill coolant
Step 5: First Start Procedure
⚠️ Critical: Proper break-in is essential for engine longevity.
Before Starting:
- Double-check all fluid levels (oil, coolant, transmission, power steering)
- Verify no loose tools or debris in engine bay
- Prime fuel system (cycle key on/off to build pressure in EFI systems)
- Disable ignition (pull fuel pump fuse or distributor wire)
- Crank engine for 10-15 seconds to build oil pressure
- Re-enable ignition and fuel system
Initial Start:
- Start engine and immediately bring to 2,000–2,500 RPM
- Maintain 2,000–2,500 RPM for 20-30 minutes for flat-tappet cam break-in
- Roller cam engines have shorter break-in requirements, but varying RPM is still beneficial
- Check for leaks during break-in (oil, coolant, fuel)
- Monitor gauges: Oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltage
After Break-In:
- Change engine oil and filter (first oil change at 500 miles or after break-in)
- Inspect for metal particles in drained oil
- Re-torque intake manifold and valve covers after heat cycle
- Check all fasteners after first drive
Transmission Installation Guide
Automatic Transmission
Pre-Installation:
- Ensure torque converter is fully seated (should hear 2-3 clicks)
- Verify flexplate is properly installed and undamaged
- Confirm transmission cooler lines are clean and unobstructed
1
Position transmission: Lift transmission onto jack; secure with strap
2
Guide torque converter: Align converter with flexplate; converter should spin freely before bolting
3
Raise transmission: Align with engine; ensure dowel pins engage
4
Install bellhousing bolts: Torque in sequence: 30-40 lb-ft (GM), 40-50 lb-ft (Ford)
5
Install torque converter bolts: Torque to 35-45 lb-ft; rotate flexplate to access all bolts
6
Install transmission mount: Do not fully tighten until exhaust and driveshaft are installed
7
Install driveshaft: Use new U-joints if needed; mark orientation before removal
8
Connect shift linkage: Verify correct adjustment; test all gear positions
9
Connect cooler lines: Use new seals; verify flow direction
10
Fill with fluid: Use correct fluid type; add 4-5 quarts initially, then start engine and add remaining
Manual Transmission
Pre-Installation:
- Inspect pilot bearing/bushing in crankshaft; replace if worn
- Verify clutch disc is properly aligned
- Inspect flywheel surface; resurface if needed
1
Install flywheel: Use new bolts with thread locker; torque to specification
2
Install clutch disc and pressure plate: Use alignment tool; torque pressure plate bolts evenly in a star pattern
3
Position transmission: Use transmission jack; ensure input shaft is aligned with clutch
4
Slide transmission forward: Rotate output shaft slightly if input shaft splines don’t align; do not use bolts to pull transmission
5
Install bellhousing bolts: Torque to specification; tighten evenly
6
Install slave cylinder: If hydraulic, bleed system thoroughly
7
Install shift linkage: Adjust to factory specifications
8
Install driveshaft: Ensure proper slip yoke engagement
9
Fill with fluid: Use correct manual transmission fluid (ATF, gear oil, or synthetic)
Outboard Motor Installation Guide
Transom Mount Outboard
Pre-Installation Requirements:
- Transom thickness: 1.5–2.5 inches typical; must be solid with no rot or cracks
- Transom height: Match motor shaft length (15″ short, 20″ long, 25″ extra-long)
- Boat capacity: Verify boat is rated for motor horsepower and weight
1
Position motor: Center motor on transom; use lifting eye with appropriate hoist
2
Adjust mounting height: Anti-ventilation plate should be even with or slightly above boat bottom
3
Mark and drill holes: Pilot drill; use stainless steel hardware with backing plate
4
Install mounting bolts: Use marine sealant around bolt holes; torque to specification
5
Connect steering: Attach steering cable; verify full range of motion
6
Connect controls: Shift and throttle cables; adjust to factory specs
7
Connect fuel system: Use marine-grade fuel lines; prime bulb orientation correct (arrow toward motor)
8
Connect battery: Use marine battery; 4-gauge or larger cable; install waterproof connections
9
Connect electrical harness: Verify gauges and tilt/trim function
10
Test in water: Start motor with water muffs first; test operation on water with proper ventilation
